FEEDING YOUR NEW BABY
When you get your kitten it will be at least 5 weeks old. By this time baby will have been bottle fed for 2 and 1/2 weeks. He or she will be on a four hour feeding schedule. Water should be available ar all times. At about 8 weeks you should be able to skip the midnight feeding and they should be sleeping thru the night.
Baby cats should be fed in a position natural to them. When they nurse a mother cat they are stretched out flat on thier bellies. The head neck and spine are in a suppline possition. So when bottle feeding babies we streatch them out over our laps and only put enough angle on the bottle to prevent them from drinking air. And yes they do need to be burped. That's my favorite part, because you can put them on your shoulder like a baby and they burp easily.
We have our own formula recipe using comercial kitten formula for the base. The ingredients can be purchased in any grocery store and we will provide you with the recipe and a starter kit.
At 7 to 11 weeks old you can start offering a little raw ground beef or ground turkey. It has worked well for us to mush the meat in our hands a little till it is luke warm and has our smell on it. Sometimes they take it quicker if you pour a small amount of formula on it. Either way they are not ready till they are ready so don't become discouraged.
Somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks baby should be weaned off to a solid diet.
